this world [21 Jan 2013|10:39am]
i would like to write a poem about the world that has in it
nothing fancy.
but it seems impossible.
whatever the subject, the morning sun
glimmers it.
the tulip feels the heat and flaps its petals open and becomes a star.
the ants bore into the peony bud and there is a dark
pinprick well of sweetness.
as for the stones on the beach, forget it.
each one could be set in gold.
so I tried with my eyes shut, but of course the birds
were singing.
and the aspen trees were shaking the sweetest music
out of their leaves.
and that was followed by, guess what, a momentous and
beautiful silence
as comes to all of us, in little earfuls, if we’re not too
hurried to hear it.
as for spiders, how the dew hangs in their webs
even if they say nothing, or seem to say nothing.
so fancy is the world, who knows, maybe they sing.
so fancy is the world, who knows, maybe the stars sing too,
and the ants, and the peonies, and the warm stones,
so happy to be where they are, on the beach, instead of being
locked up in gold.

slow parade [05 Apr 2010|04:07pm]
drag your shadow down the street
was it you i was to meet?
with your saints there on a chain
waiting on another rain

and i'm going down
where the waves will surround
to the roar and the pound
of the wild wild sea
talking sweet to me

marching in a slow parade
there are ashes where you laid
sometimes i don't mind at all
sometimes head against the wall
the tide will bring and tide will take
find another horse to break
you're just a rider on a wheel
in a dream where love was real

and i'm going down
where the waves will surround
to the roar and the pound
of the wild wild sea
talking sweet to me

there are buds on the lilac tree out back
and a new herb garden planted on the windowsill
i reupholstered a stepping stool
and fixed up some old furniture reclaimed from an apartment dumpster
there is homemade granola baking in the oven

feeling nostalgic for simpler times
when a friend reminds me that maybe those times are just blissed out

and maybe i'm just living for a memory
or, maybe i just like the idea of it

if you are into science, and particularly into biology, i recommend to you the book a long line of cells by lewis thomas. it is absolutely fascinating. even if you don't know much about science, the information is very clear and concise. amazing. read it.

hey! i've been fairly busy and thus not posting much of anything, but i wanted to share these links with you. some are not for profit organizational websites that have to do with being a responsible consumer, others about the environment, etc. thought i'd share. take it easy!!

also, would anyone in calgary be interested in joining a sort of kyoto forum? i will certainly let you know when more details become available to me, but i would like to see if anyone is interested in this sort of thing first. thanks.
